Rhythm Pixies in Hull
The Hull Rhythm Pixies meet on a regular basis at Albemarle Centre in Hull. This is the first time that Music4U has used the Hull Music Service Centre and musical equipment as a base for a project and young people are really appreciating the opportunity of experiencing a professional music environment.
The project supports young people who would like to develop their music interest and skills. They work with a professional musician to bring together a variety of music styles to create a world music sound. They recently performed at the annual Youth Arts Festival in October half-term at Hull Truck Theatre.
Young people have been referred from many different projects, including prior Music4U and Hull Youth Development Service projects, and the ensemble includes young people from Hut Youth Centre on Preston Road and Fountain House Pupil Referral Unit.
The group is are currently in the process of applying to Youth Music to develop this project further into the Hull World Urban Street orchestra. Some of the Rhythm Pixies will act as mentors and support an orchestra to rehearse and perform. The orchestra's sections aim to include a vast range of musicians from MCs, Rappers, scratch DJs, beat boxers, Steve Vai style guitar shredders, circuit benders to classical violin players and brass.
