International Young Artists Competition Winners 1988
The York Early Music International Young Artists Competition takes place as part of York Early Music Festival. A biennial competition for early music ensembles, it is recognised as a major international platform for emerging talent in the early music world, offering a major boost to professional careers with opportunities for performance, recording and broadcasting.
"Back in 1988, winning the competition was the first major thing we'd ever done, coming as we left university. Just performing on such a platform made us grow up a bit (only a bit though) and made us think more about programming, while winning introduced us to a whole host of promoters and gave us our first Wigmore Hall concert. 25 years on, we still love what we do. We've been all over the world doing it and have tried to remain true to our particular repertoire and our take on it. It's particularly rewarding for me now to be teaching in the music department at the University of York, passing on my, and the group's, experience in ensemble singing to students here."
