Award for Percussionist Billy Hickling

Billy Hickling won the Shine Award 2013 for best music provider.

Shine is the City of York's provision for out of school activities for young people and Billy has been delivering STOMP-style junk percussion workshop for young people across the city - in schools, in youth clubs and in parks!

Over the past year he has reached more than 1000 young people of all ages and abilities, many of whom have never experienced this vibrant and accessible way of making music before. As a result, Billy and his junk percussion is in increasing demand in a range of settings all over the region.

Tim Brooks manager of York Arts Education says: "This project has been an overwhelming success and we are very grateful to Billy for his expertise and dedication. It has also proved an excellent model of music hub partnerships between York Arts Education (as the lead partner), the National Centre for Early Music/Music4U, Shine, schools and Billy as an independent provider.

"It has been very encouraging to see, in a time of economic difficultly, that such a vibrant partnership has helped to reach so many young people with limited funding."
