The Listening Bus in Hull

Music4U piloted a music session for young deaf children in partnership with Music and the Deaf and Hull City Council, on board the National Deaf Children's Society's Listening Bus in Hull on Friday 2 May 2014. The session was aimed at families in the Early Years Music Group, which is supported by Annette Parr, education audiologist with Hull City Council.

Ten children aged 0-2 and their carers participated in the session. Danny Lane from Music and the Deaf delivered a range of musical games, exposing the children to different songs, instruments and musical properties. The most wonderful moment was when Danny showed the kids what was in his trumpet case - they were all mesmerized. Many of the participants were able to experience instruments, which were entirely new to them and learn songs and games which could be practised at home.

This small-scale pilot represents the first time that Music4U has partnered with Music and the Deaf and the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) on a project. The activity showed how bringing together the expertise and resources from experienced organisations can bring about fantastic music-making opportunities for young people.

The hugely popular Listening Bus has been traveling around the UK since 1996 delivering the NDCS's unique information service to the doorstep of the nation's deaf children; their families and friends and the professionals working with them.
