Biography

The Fitzwilliam is now one of the longest established string quartets in the world. Founded in 1968 by four Cambridge undergraduates, the quartet achieved international recognition at the very outset of its career, as a result of its personal friendship with Dmitri Shostakovich towards the end of his life. He entrusted them with the Western premières of his last three quartets, and they soon became the first ever group to perform and record all fifteen. These discs, which gained many international awards, secured for them a worldwide concert schedule, and a long term contract with Decca. Since 2000 their recordings have been produced by either Linn Records or Divine Art, the latest being the Bruckner String Quintet and Quartet (on 19th cent gut strings). Next year a more long term ambition to record Beethoven quartets on gut will begin with a CD of Opp.74, 95, and 135. Indeed, the Fitzwilliam remains one of the few prominent quartets to play on older set-ups, but has simultaneously brought about the addition of over 50 new works to the repertoire. Highlights of the past year have included their annual visit to the USA in February, followed soon after by a busy clutch of festivals, including Beverley Early Music, the English Haydn, Swaledale, and their own Fitzwilliam Hay-on-Wye Festival.

"The Fitzwilliam String Quartet, in my opinion, is, and has been for many years, Britain's premier string quartet ensemble.......a flagship British ensemble that should be the pride of that nation." Jerry Dubins, Fanfare
