Biography

a master of the instrument. . . . admirable playing of a refined and undeservedly neglected repertoire (Gramophone)

. . . effortless control of tone and sense of musical direction . . . could not be more convincingly presented (BBC Music Magazine)

The American-born lute player Jacob Heringman has based himself in England since 1987, and is in great demand as a soloist and ensemble player performing regularly throughout Europe and the Americas, and making many recordings with leading ensembles and singers. Jacob Heringman has a reputation for his passionate and committed recitals and recordings of deserving but neglected renaissance repertoire. His seven solo recordings have all been widely praised by critics. Jacob teaches the lute at the Universities of York and Newcastle, and gives occasional master classes at the Guildhall School and at various international summer schools. He is also a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique. His lute playing can also be heard on the soundtracks of many films, including Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Kingdom of Heaven, Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and The Hobbit. In recent years, Jacob has become increasingly active in the fields of new and improvised music.
