Biography

Russell Gilmour is a natural trumpet specialist and a skilled cornetto player. Performing on the natural trumpet, keyed trumpet, modern trumpet and cornetto, Russell has given live performances, as well as radio and television broadcasts, in more than 15 countries in Europe, North America and Australia.

Russell has performed and recorded with some of the finest period instrument ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, the Taverner Consort, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Orchestra of the 18th Century and the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra.

Recent performances have included Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.2 at the Valletta Baroque Festival; and works by Gabrieli and Zielenski on the cornetto in St. Mark's Basilica, Venice. Let the Bright Seraphim in Westminster Abbey and Haydn's Trumpet Concerto on the keyed trumpet in Edmonton, Canada have been other notable performances.

Russell's enthusiasm for performing and researching Renaissance, Baroque and Classical music, particularly the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, was cultivated at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester), under the inspiring influence of David Staff. This fascination continued throughout his studies with Michael Laird at the Royal College of Music (London), where Russell gained the 'Master of Music in Historical Performance' qualification with distinction.

In addition to performing, Russell is an experienced and fully qualified teacher. He has lectured at the Oxford University Faculty of Music and Bate Collection on behalf of the Taverner Consort. He has also lectured at at Royal Holloway, University of London, the Royal Academy of Music and University College of London.
