Potter, John - tenor

Period(s) Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque
Style of ensemble Vocal, Soloist

Biography

John Potter's collaborators include the lutenists Ariel Abramovich and Jacob Heringman, the ensemble known as Amores Pasados (expanding the idea of the lute song with the lutenists and the soprano Anna-Maria Friman to include works by John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Tony Banks of Genesis, and Sting, and by early-20th century English composers), and the Dowland Project, both groups represented on CDs for ECM Records. This was also the label that released many of the recordings that John made with the Hilliard Ensemble, notably Officium, the winner of five gold discs.

On Hyperion Records, his CDs with Red Byrd have been followed by three with the ensemble Conductus (with the tenors Christopher O'Gorman and Rogers Covey-Crump), exploring aspects of medieval song and how to realise it, as part of a research project for the University of Southampton. All these ensembles have toured extensively, and particularly in central Europe and Spain.

Also a writer and scholar, John has produced four books, and since leaving the University of York in 2010 as emeritus reader has continued to publish articles and research papers. He has acted as a competition judge, examiner and ensemble coach in several countries.
