CHRISTMAS 2018
York Early Music Christmas Festival

York Early Music Christmas Festival, a firm favourite on the festive December calendar in the Medieval city of York, showcases beautiful music from different parts of the world with performances from internationally acclaimed ensembles to participatory choral workshops and candlelit events.

York Early Music Christmas Festival Friday 8 - Saturday 15 December 2018

Join us for the antidote to a chaotic Christmas and to set the tone for a relaxed and music-filled yuletide with the National Centre for Early Music's much-loved annual York Early Music Christmas Festival - celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Ten events over eight days, highlights of which include Bach's Christmas Oratorio, presented by Yorkshire Baroque Soloists, and a mix of established and new artists including Voces8, Ex Cathedra, Spiritato, The York Waits and Joglaresa.

There's also an opportunity for singers to find their own voice during a participatory choral workshop, led by James Weeks (Sat 8th).

The performances are mainly held in the intimate candlelit surroundings of the NCEM's York home in St Margaret's Church, off Walmgate, and there are mince pies and wine at most concerts.

Dates for Festivals in 2019
Last weekend in May - Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival
Fri 5 - Sat 13 July 2019 - York Early Music Festival - Innovation: The Shock of the New

Delma Tomlin, Director of NCEM, says: "We're delighted to welcome back some familiar and popular faces to our annual festive outing, including the much loved Joglaresa, Spiritato, and the talented Piers Adams with the Dodo Street Band. It also gives us great pleasure to continue in our work to showcase new and emerging talent, and this year we are looking forward to the vibrant young quartet, Improviso and Voces8 who make their debut in York.

"Early music is particularly suited to creating a warm and delicious soundscape to Christmas, with so many pieces originally composed to entertain and gather people at this time of year. Guests to our events will find a warm welcome, and often a warm mince pie, as we nurture our own communities in York this December."
