SSAI Commission - The Trumpet Marine Project

Clare Salaman with the trumpet marine

SSAI's trumpet marine quartet
The Society of Strange and Ancient Instruments ( ), in partnership with the NCEM, invited all former finalists of the NCEM Young Composers Award to apply for a new commission for trumpet marine quartet

The Trumpet Marine, a spectacular, towering, single-stringed bowed instrument that sounds like a trumpet, is being revived by SSAI. The project will not only provide fresh information about the sights and sounds of late 17th-century England but will also explore the unique sound of the instrument by commissioning new music.

We are delighted to announce that the commission has been awarded to Liam Connery, a NCEM finalist in 2019. Liam will receive a commission fee of £900 (to include travel and accommodation for the events in London and York), plus two complimentary tickets to the first performance of the Trumpet Marine Project in York on Thursday 9 July 2020, as part of York Early Music Festival.
