Songs of Religious and Erotic Passion from Rome

A concert exploring the mingling of the spiritual and the sensual in Roman music of the 17th century, when composers gave free reign to a bold, visceral style and the language of erotic passion intertwined with fervent outpourings of religious devotion. The programme includes passionate vocal ground-bass variations by Frescobaldi, Mazzocchi's extraordinarily chromatic Lagrime amare (a lament of Mary Magdalene), and the ravishingly sensual Vidi ondegiar questi infecondi campi from a manuscript associated with the great Roman musical patron Cardinal Montalto. Also featured is a 'fire and brimstone' cantata by Carissimi, Luigi Rossi's pop-style tune for a brooding lover, and the recently discovered Ancidetemi pur for chitarrone by Kapsberger.

"the diminutive Paula Chateauneuf and the brilliant tenor Mark Tucker [worked together] in a revelatory exploration.. a wonderfully fertile interpretation”. The Independent
