Venice at Carnival: the town doubled in size for weeks of misrule from St Stephen's Day until Shrove Tuesday. The best musicians and commedia dell'arte groups were on first-name terms with princes, performing on the street but also in ticketed entertainments. I Fagiolini recreate an evening of such masques and musical mayhem: political caricatures; a trip down a canal via supposed Benedictine monk Adriano Banchieri; Gabrieli's lament calling on the lagoon's seafood to bewail the death of Willaert, and excerpts from Vecchi's peerless madrigal comedy Amfiparnaso (Twin Peaks) introducing us to masked commedia characters Pantalone, the Dottore, the Spanish captain and more.

"I Fagiolini certainly bring a little-known repertoire to audiences in a fun, unpretentious and approachable way, and this, combined with some wonderful ensemble singing, made for a night out to remember.” Bachtrack

"If there's a more enterprisingly theatrical vocal group than this one, I've yet to encounter it...” Daily Telegraph
