Nunca fué pena mayor: A Mass and Motets by Francisco de Peñalosa

Holder of positions at three of the most important musical institutions of the early 16th century – the Aragonese royal chapel, Seville Cathedral and the papal chapel of Leo X – Francisco da Peñalosa was one of the illustrious composers of the Spanish Golden Age, as well as one of the most prolific. Ensemble Gilles Binchois make a welcome return to York to bring us his Missa Nunca fué pena mayor, based on one of the most widely disseminated Castilian-texted secular songs of the period, setting it amongst a selection of his motets to show his wide-ranging skills as a composer.

Gilles Binchois is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Communication and regional council of Bourgogne, and by the City of Dijon. Les Sacqueboutiers is supported by the Midi Pyrénées Region Council, the Haute-Garonne General Council and the Toulouse City Council.
