Trio Da Kali
The New Generation of Griot Soul

NCEM, York
Thursday 5 March 7:30pm

Adults £13.00 | Concessions £11.00 | Students £5.00

Hailing from the Mande culture of Mali in West Africa, this trio returns to the original spirit of griot music with a fresh, contemporary voice. They revive a neglected repertoire, with songs celebrating life and love in the deep Mande countryside. The performance revolves around the voice of Hawa Kassé Mady (daughter of Kasse Mady Diabaté). While few can match the dazzling virtuosity of ensemble leader Lassana Diabaté on the balafon, Mamadou Kouyaté (son of Bassekou Kouyate who played at the NCEM in 2008) completes the line-up with punchy bass lines on the ngoni, West Africa's oldest string instrument. Since their debut at the BBC Proms in 2013 the trio has gone on to collaborate with the Kronos Quartet as well as kora maestro Toumani Diabate. They will be releasing their first EP album on World Circuit to celebrate their first UK tour.
