Early Music virtuoso, Catherine Bott and doyenne of the English folk scene Shirley Collins join together to celebrate a woman's life and loves in song - accompanied by David McGuiness on keyboard. These songs from town and country are part of a tenacious English tradition that survived the drift of the labouring classes from the land, two World Wars and the rapid rise of pop culture. The lyric songs of the tradition are of great beauty, imbued with a quintessentially English melancholy, subtle decoration and rhythms. Other songs are franker and bolder, reflecting the attitudes of resolute and undaunted women, and some have a dark heart.
'… (Shirley Collins) without doubt one of England's cultural treasures' Billy Bragg
'...Sensual and smooth on the surface, (Catherine Bott's) vocalism also digs into the text with a rare commitment worthy of spoken theatre' Gramophone
