Written in 1734 when Bach was at the height of his considerable powers, the Christmas Oratorio is rarely heard in its complete form. Tonight's sequence of all six cantatas presents Bach at his finest and most festive, calling for his largest orchestral forces with many memorable and ornate solo instrumental lines, whilst presenting the soloists with some of his most challenging, and exquisitely beautiful, solo writing.
