Istanbul-born singer Aslan, performs in many languages including Turkish, Kurdish, Greek, Bulgarian, Roma and Ladino. She studied Englishliterature at Istanbul University and regularly performs rebetiko, Sephardic and other ethnic music of Turkey.
Çiğdem is now known as a rising star in the revival of rebetiko – the bitter-sweet, devil-may-care songs, sung in hash dens and café aman music houses of Athens, Piraeus and Istanbul in the turbulent 1920s and also performs with the award-winning klezmer band She'Koyokh.
With character, charm and emotion, she takes audiences on a journey; with passion and humour she opens the door on old songs, which speak about life, love, hopes and struggles of everyday people. She is joined by an ensemble of top-class musicians as she revisits past times to make these songs seem as fresh and relevant as if they had been composed yesterday.
