Around York

Braille
The Centre has a copy of a Braille map of York City Centre, produced by the Royal Institute for the Blind, which visitors are welcome to look out.

Talking Signs
The York Blind and Partially Sighted Society (YBPSS) also has installed 17 'Talking Signs' throughout the City of York. Talking signs relay information in an audible, verbal format and provide the same information to visually-impaired people that printed signs provide to the sighted community.

A special badge is needed to activate the talking sign. If you are wearing this badge, and come within five to seven meters of a talking sign, the sign automatically begins speaking the information associated with that sign. The signs give orientation advice about the location rather than route guidance and help visually-impaired people have a more independent journey around York.

The signs speak four different languages - English, Urdu, Bengali and Gujerati and there is a separate trigger card for each language.

York residents can get these badges on permanent loan from YBPSS. Visitors to York who are registered visually impaired, can borrow badges short-term from YBPSS. For more information contact: York Blind and Partially Sighted Society, 61 Bootham, York, Tel: 01904 636269

Our staff are keen to make sure your visit to the National Centre for Early Music is enjoyable. If you have any special needs please let us now in advance when either booking tickets for events or using the Centre’s conferences facilities.
