TECHNICAL

Image of Recording Facility: Click to Zoom The National Centre for Early Music benefits from a professionally installed digital recording system, that is aimed at making extremely high-quality stereo recordings, ideally suited for solo or chamber ensemble performances.

The Centre’s equipment includes:

  • Tascam TMD4000 digital mixing console
  • Tascam DA78HR 8 track multi track machine
  • Tascam DA20 MkII DAT recorder
  • 2 x AKG C414 microphones
  • 2 x Røde NT2 microphones
  • 2 x dynamic microphones
  • 2 x HHBB Circle 5 active monitors

Although the Centre provides its own recording equipment it can accommodate recording companies and individuals who wish to bring in their own equipment.

Stage-boxes connected to the control room are situated throughout the main recording space providing great flexibility in terms of positioning performers. The control room is also equipped with a video link to the live area.

The system has been designed to be highly accurate for quality performance recordings, but maintains enough flexibility to be used for a wide variety of recording situations including master classes, workshops and music education.

The Centre also has good links with many local engineers who can be hired for recording sessions.

    Acoustic Panels

Image of Recording Facility: Click to Zoom The central recording space at the National Centre for Early Music has an excellent natural acoustic, which can be enhanced by acoustic panels set high on the walls of the church.

Designed and implemented by Arup Acoustics, the acoustic panels can be easily opened and closed, which, together with variable ceiling drapes and seating arrangements, work to vary the reverberation time of the space from 2.5 seconds down to 1 second. Variations between these extremes are also possible.
