BEVERLEY & EAST RIDING EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL
Friday 24 – Sunday 26 May 2024

The Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival was established in 1988 to celebrate this glorious county town’s historic association with musicians from medieval times. Blessed by a wealth of extraordinarily rich ecclesiastical buildings, and a wealth of musical carvings in stone & wood in both Beverley Minster and St Mary’s Church, Beverley is the perfect place for a festival of early music. Supported by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and administered by the National Centre for Early Music, the festival draws in residents and visitors alike to its annual series of concerts, illustrated lectures and associated workshops.

The Festival opens with the vibrant young Spanish instrumental group El Gran Teatro del Mundo and closes with The Telling presenting their critically acclaimed stage show Into the Melting Pot. With guest artists including the award-winning vocal ensemble Tenebrae revelling in the musical brilliance of the Spanish Golden Age; violinist Bojan Cicic and harpsichordist Steven Devine focusing on the music of Handel and Carbonelli; the London Handel Players presenting A World of Inspiration programme, and the recently appointed BBC Radio 3 New Generation Baroque Ensemble Augelletti focusing on the curious mind of a York clergyman.

If you’re looking to take part, or find out more about Beverley’s very particular history, then you won’t be disappointed either. Instrumentalists are invited to a day long workshop led by members of El Gran Teatro del Mundo and singers have two choices - to join us with SongPath on a singing walk around Beverley and/or to work with Tenebrae on the glorious repertory presented on the Saturday in Beverley Minster. Add in the illustrated lectures about Beverley from the iron age to the medieval and we can promise you a weekend to remember.
