The 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd offers the chance to explore the music of a composer often considered to be ‘the father of English music’. Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices is one of the most intensely personal and expressive settings of the period. We intersperse this music with motets (Propers) by Byrd, Sheppard, and Weelkes, who also died in 1623.
