Brave New Worlds: choral music by William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, Christopher Fox, Errolyn Wallen

By way of Hildegard of Bingen to Errolyn Wallen, we trace visions of a new world in all its forms –focusing particularly on William Byrd’s pentitential motets and Christopher Fox’s choral triptych Brave New Worlds. Byrd’s intensely moving penitential motets mark the apogee of English polyphony, combining intricate counterpoint with expressive vocal writing. The works reflect the hopes and fears of English Catholics in Elizabethan England, who were worshipping in ‘lockdown’. Christopher Fox’s ‘Brave New Worlds’, was composed during a different, more recent lockdown for Ex Corde: it offers three very different visions of a new world, as seen by Thomas More, Aldous Huxley, and von Harbou (his book Metropolis, the basis of the influential film).
