JS Bach: Komm, süsses Kreuz (from St Matthew Passion, BWV244)

The cantata, whether sacred or secular, was the greatest smaller-scale vocal genre of the high baroque. Handel and Bach produced many, and those for a single voice and single accompanying instrument – such as begin and end this concert – allowed the widest and most vivid range of emotions. In between them we hear a selection of [arrangements of?] arias from larger-scale works – operas, church cantatas and passions – encompassing a host of emotions from the tragedy of love to reverence for the heavenly majesty of the Cross.
