The Violinist Speaks

JS Bach : Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007 (transposed into D Major for violin)
Tartini: Sonata in B Minor
Biber: Passacaglia in G minor for solo violin from the Mystery Sonatas ‘The Guardian Angel’
JS Bach: Partita No. 2 in D minor for solo violin, BWV 1004

From the cream of Baroque music for solo stringed instruments come Heinrich Biber’s haunting and mesmeric Passacaglia, a Sonata by the great 18th-century violin-composer Giuseppe Tartini full of subtle emotional colourings, and Bach’s superb D minor Partita, which culminates in another great and powerful Chaconne. Rachel Podger adds to these her own recent transcription of the first of Bach’s solo Cello Suites.

‘Podger is something of a ‘guardian angel’ herself. There is a sureness to the placing of every note, whether poised or bristling with bites and bravado. All in all, utterly ‘stupendious’. BBC Music Magazine
