Johann Kuhnau: Christmas Cantatas

Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (UK première)
O heilige zeit (Cantata for Christmas)
Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern
Frohlocket, ihr Völker, und jauchzet, ihr Heiden (UK première)
Das Alte ist vergangen (UK première)

300 years after his death, it’s high time to bring the 16th cantor of the Thomasschule in Leipzig Johann Kuhnau out of the eclipsing shadow of his well-known successor – one JS Bach! Thanks to the pioneering work of scholar and countertenor David Erler, his sparkling vocal works are ever-more widely available and Solomon’s Knot return to the festival to give three of them their first UK performance in York. With festive trumpets, horns, and drums, these cantatas for Christmas and New Year are the crackers you’re looking for.
