A guided tour of the medieval carved musicians of Beverley with Tim Bayley of The York Waits

The two great churches of Beverley, the Minster and St Mary’s, contain one of the largest collection of carved instrumentalists in Europe, spanning over two hundred years. This is not so surprising given that Beverley was the Guild town for musicians from the Trent to the Tweed. Our progress takes a detailed look at the carvings in both churches, describing the workings and usage of the varied stringed, wind and percussion instruments depicted in stone and wood. Our tour will finish in the Beverley Guildhall where you can also see the early 15th century silver Waits chains, the official badges of office of the local professional band, which are housed in the Guildhall Museum.

Tim Bayley has played with The York Waits for many years and performs regularly on instruments which are carved in the Beverley churches.
