Il n’y a pas d’amour heureux
Love, betrayal, loss: raw emotions that infuse the songs and opera arias of the early baroque in Italy. Here the four musicians of French ensemble La Palatine explore the heights and depths of love’s passion and disenchantment, including arias by Tarquinio Merula of Cremona, Domenico Mazzocchi in Rome, and Claudio Moneteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna, the only part to survive from his lost second Mantuan opera. Abandoned by Theseus, Arianna is at first desolate, then rages in anger and is finally resolute in accepting her fate, with every twist and turn in her emotional journey vividly portrayed in Monteverdi’s music. Love may not always end happily, but how powerfully it can inspire a creative genius!
