This concert explores two quintessentially English composers whose meditative, often transcendent, musical styles have a great deal in common. Tallis’s motets exhibit a craftsmanship and intensity of expression that speak directly to the listener, not least in his exquisite settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah. In Vaughan Williams’s Mass in G the rich harmonic language of Tudor polyphony is reborn in a unique 20th century choral idiom for double chorus and soloists.
