In the early 1970s David Munrow and The Early Music Consort of London took the disparate sound worlds of Renaissance instrumental consorts and created a ‘big band’ to record exhilarating sequences of 16th century dance music full of colour and imagination. William Lyons, director of The City Musick, recalls the impact of those ground-breaking recordings and assesses their place in the history of historical performance.
