Biography

Historical period - 13th, 14th and 15th C

Gaita specialise in music from the European courts of the 13th-, 14th- and 15th-centuries. We especially perform music from Scottish sources but also the songs of the Troubadours, the Cantigas de Santa Maria from Spain, the early Ars Nova of Italy, and 15th-century dance music. Our concert programmes include 'Arthur's Court - Songs of Romance and Chivalry', 'Days of the Decameron', 'Le Roman de Fauvel', a musical history of the Kings of Scotland, and the miracles of the Cantigas de Santa Maria.

We aim to present the music in a medieval context, presenting the music in a semi-staged performance, often intertwined with stories. The ensemble performs on the instruments of the 'Alta' group - shawms and bagpipes - and the 'Bas' group fiddle, harp, lute and voice. We are easily adaptable to playing in various venues but especially suitable for medieval spaces such as churches or castles.
