Biography
Andrew Benson-Wilson is an acknowledged specialist in the performance of early organ music. His playing is informed by his experience of historic instruments, an understanding of period techniques of performance and by several internationally renowned teachers. Through his concerts, workshop teaching and writing, Andrew seeks to inspire an appreciation of the organ literature of the fourteenth to early nineteenth centuries. His recitals can feature an individual composer, a focused theme or a broader introduction to a period or school of composition.
Andrew is the only performer to have recorded all of Thomas Tallis' organ works. His CD of the complete liturgical organ works (recorded on the early 17th-century organ at Knole - Signum SIGCD016) was Gramophone Magazine's 'Record of the Month'. The non-liturgical works are on SIGCD042. His recordings have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and throughout the world.
Andrew is a regular writer on early music topics. His book, 'The Performance of Early Organ Music', has proved an invaluable introduction to performance practice, and is a required text in a number of universities. Andrew also reviews concerts and CDs for Early Music Review and writes for other journals.
