Sestina Consort - viol consort and voices

Period(s) Renaissance, Baroque
Style of ensemble Vocal, Instrumental, Consort

Biography

Formed in 2004 after a master class given by Wieland Kuijken, the Sestina Consort has established itself as one of the leading ensembles specialising in both instrumental and vocal repertories for viols. The group is named after the poetical form, sestina, whose authors in the Renaissance inspired some of the most beautiful musical settings for voices and viols.

Known for its dynamic and vibrant performances, the Sestina Consort has been invited to play in many festivals and concert series across Europe (including Festival Laus Polyphoniae Antwerp, Musikinstrumentenmuseum Berlin, Festival de Musique Ancienne de Ribeauvillé, Basel Festtage, Festival Marin Marais Paris, Festival International de Viole de gambe d'Asfeld, Poole Lighthouse Arts Centre) and has performed with celebrity artists such as Emma Kirkby, Evelyn Tubb, Clare Wilkinson and Anthony Rooley. In 2010 it was one of the six ensembles to be given the title "IYAP Selected Promising Ensemble" by the International Young Artists' Presentation in Antwerp. In 2012 the ensemble was invited to perform in the Fringe serie of the Festival Musica Antiqua in Bruges and as "Fabulous Fringe" in that of the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht. The consort has appeared on several live radio broadcasts including in Holland and in Canada (Quebec). A first recording with English consort songs and instrumental music of the 17th c. is currently in preparation and will be released soon.
