Making Music with Early Years Children

Led by Cathryn Dew

18 November, National Centre for Early Music, Walmgate, York, YO1 9TL

10am - 3pm

A day-long course for people interested in helping babies and young children (0 to 5) to make music.

The course will look at:

How the very young acquire and develop musical skills
Good ways to lead singing
Working with instruments
Working with props and puppets
Making music with babies
Making music with toddlers
Great songs and good things to do with them

The course is designed for people with prior experience of music making (i.e. people who play an instrument or have experience singing in a choir or other group).  The ability to read music is not essential if you feel comfortable learning songs by ear.

Cathryn Dew is the Education Consultant at the National Centre for Early Music.  She has many years'' experience of making music with the very young.  With Sue Hollingworth, she developed Melody Monkey''s Marvellous Music Box for Music4U, containing songs, stories and other resources to aid music making in Early Years settings.  She runs Small Sounds, a music group for children in Norfolk, and enjoys singing and playing instruments with her own two-year-old.

Cost:  £5 including tea/coffee etc.

Please note - lunch is not included.  There are many local outlets where food can be purchased, or you are welcome to bring a packed lunch.

Childminders, why not bring your children too?  We will hold a demonstration music session from 10.30 to 11.15 with any children present.  Child places are limited so please advise the Box Office when booking.
