Voltage, which ran from April 2008 until March 2011, was Youth Music's national music volunteering programme for young people, aged 16-25. Funded by v, the youth volunteering charity, the three-year £300,000 programme aimed to provide more than 300 young people with volunteering opportunities. Voltage gave them the chance to act as ambassadors for music, make a positive difference to their local community and gain rewards and accreditation for their contributions to the programme. Voltage was implemented by selected delivery partners, including Youth Music Action Zones and community arts organisations, with a total of nine regions covered by the programme over the three years. Each delivery partner also supported ten young people per year to take part in taster volunteering opportunities, designed to reach young people who would not normally have the chance or the support to volunteer.

Over the three years, Music4U worked with partners in all four Humber Region Local Authorities, including Freedom Road Creative Arts and Hull City Council, North East Lincolnshire Council, The Junction in Goole, and Indiependent (a voluntary sector organisation for young people in North Lincolnshire). The young people in these areas have worked to put on performance and sharing events, to run music workshops and to establish lasting models for volunteer-led musical programmes in their communities.
