Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Glorious Epic of the Antarctic

An extraordinary story of survival in the wastes of Antarctica.

A record of one of the greatest survival stories in the history of exploration, South is the original film – exquisitely photographed by Frank Hurley – of Shackleton’s 1914-16 expedition to Antarctica aboard the Endurance, during which the ship was crushed by ice, stranding the crew. Unseen since it sank in the Weddell Sea in 1915, the wreck of Endurance was finally found in March 2022.

Frame Ensemble, a quartet of Northern musicians specialising in improvised silent film accompaniments, return to NCEM, complementing the BFI’s digital restoration of South with a unique and atmospheric soundscape.
